The following basic parameters must be considered before selecting a linear motion solution. These basic parameters include load, total travel, travel speed, accuracy, and whether intermediate stop or positioning is required.
The two main driving technologies of linear motion are electric and pneumatic. Electric drive requires the use of motor, while pneumatic drive requires the use of traditional cylinder or rodless cylinder. Linear motion usually requires a slider with a slide rail to support the mechanism with sufficient strength and minimum friction during operation.
Compared with electric motor drive, the price of traditional pneumatic cylinder drive is lower. A traditional cylinder is actually a tube with a piston inside, which is connected to a rod. When the air pressure in the cylinder changes, the rod can move and provide power.
In addition to the traditional cylinder, another cylinder is the rodless pneumatic cylinder. There is also a piston inside the rodless cylinder, which is usually magnetized to facilitate the sensor to detect its position. Rodless air cylinders usually have two air inlets for suction or discharge of air on one side or the other. The piston of the rodless cylinder is not connected to the rod, but to an external bracket. The outer bracket can slide along the rodless single acting cylinder and move with the piston. Rodless cylinders have many advantages and can be installed in a smaller space.
Linear Motion Knockout Punch
The rodless hydraulic cylinder can save space in a direction other than the horizontal direction. Some factories cover a small area, but the ceiling is very high. If the cylinder is installed horizontally, a lot of space will be wasted. However, if the rodless compact cylinder is installed vertically, the space in the factory can be fully utilized and the floor area can be saved. The topmost station will punch a hole in a thin steel plate. When this station was on the ground it used a standard cylinder with a 200 mm stroke. The cylinder protruded up above the machinery by about 300 mm.
Although vertical layout has many advantages, it also has some problems. The final distance between the punch cylinder and the fire sprinkler guide is only 15 inches. Every other part of the machine is more than 6 inches below the top of the cylinder. The distance between the fire sprinkler guide and the machine shall be at least 18 inches in accordance with NFPA13. In this case, the distance between the machine and the nozzle deflector can be increased to 21 inches by installing a rodless air compressor cylinder.
The price of rodless air piston cylinder is higher than that of ordinary rod cylinder. Although the rodless double acting cylinder can save space, this advantage is more significant only in the case of long stroke. If the space for linear motion is large, especially for long stroke, rodless micro pneumatic cylinder can usually be used instead of traditional rod cylinder. In any case, the upfront cost and maintenance cost of rodless cylinder drive will be much lower than that of motor drive.
