Pneumatic linear actuators have a lot of advantages, which can offer numerous helps for a wide variety of applications, only that they must be used and specified properly. Otherwise, the effects will be influenced and there are some problems appeared, such as less-than-desired productivity, downtime problem and so on. Then what mistakes will appear when determining the size of pneumatic gripper cylinder? How to select the right size pneumatic linear cylinder?
1. The problem of oversize
When using pneumatic cylinder parts, it is not that the bigger the size is, the better pneumatic cylinder component is. That is to say, bigger is not always right. When customizing size for a gripper cylinder part of your application, the important thing is to determine the amount of force required. Usually a horizontal moving load uses the total load weight x the coefficient of sliding or rolling friction, which will show you the minimum required cylinder force. Once determining, an additional 20% for losses will be added. At the desired pressure, a cylinder which will produce the force will be selected. Regarding the calculation, you can refer to the following formula:
Load Weight x Coefficient of Sliding/Rolling Friction = Min Required Cylinder Force
Therefore, selecting a larger-than-necessary cylinder will cause some results such as increasing air usage undesired, adding more stress to the working parts, wasting energy and increased operating costs etc.
2. The problem of undersize
Maybe a smaller bore or lighter actuator can save some cost temporarily. But if the pneumatic gripper cylinder size is too small, it will cause some serious problems such as poor performance, undue wear-and-tear and so on, which will cause cylinder failure ultimately. The key is that it is not the only risk, and there are other risks from a production line down situation including damaging to other working parts, inventory and loss production etc.
3. The problem of no considering moment loads
For sizing a pneumatic actuator, the important thing is to consider the load orientation and the resulting moment loads supplied by the cylinder guiding member. It might be a single moment load, or a combination of multiple moment loads. For a combination of multiple moments, each moment should be considered when customizing size for pneumatic cylinder device of a given application.
4. The problem of not prototyping the applications
Now there are many applications, and some applications are very complex, which need to design and prove out for prototype of your application. Sometimes, the applications are not prototyped, which cause miss-applied cylinders used, so that some problems ultimately appeared, such as expensive service calls, expensive solutions that remedy the problem and potentially loss of credibility etc. If the time to complete a project is limited, you must make sure that the timeline of the whole project is available.
